I started our conversation by asking him about where he thinks that calm came from originally to which he credits some of it to his parents. One of the first things I noticed about Rick in preparation for our time together was that he has such a systematic easy to follow approach to his teachings as well as his calm nature. This includes grief and loss, which is what we talk about a lot in this conversation. What all of that comes down to is that he is an expert when it comes to the brain and how it responds to various events and behaviors. He’s lectured at NASA, Google, Oxford, and Harvard, and taught in meditation centers worldwide. His books have been published in 29 languages with 900,000 copies being sold in English alone. Rick describes himself as a neuropsychologist and is also a New York Times bestselling author and Senior Fellow of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Dr, Rick Hanson Ph.D.

There are, however, a few Tokyo locations mentioned in the book that make for an interesting day trip. As The Murakami Pilgrimage only covers locations within Japan, we’re not left with so many places left to explore from this novel. Aside from the small Greek island that the main characters visit, we also learn about a previous experience Miu had in a Swiss town that caused her hair to turn white. This is one of the few Murakami novels in which most of the significant points of the plot take place outside Japan. He agrees to take a spontaneous trip to Greece to track down his friend Sumire, with whom he’s madly in love. After Sumire suddenly disappears into thin air, our narrator gets a call from a concerned Miu. Business obligations take the pair to Europe and they eventually decide to relax for awhile on a small, unnamed Greek island. Sputnik Sweetheart, narrated by the elementary school teacher simply known as K, revolves around Sumire and her infatuation with her older boss Miu. In 1946 he enrolled at Harvard (majoring in French Literature) and began pursuing numerous artistic interests, publishing stories, poems, designing sets, directing and writing for the influential Poets Theatre (with John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Alison Lurie, Violet Lang, and others). He served during World War II from 1943 until after the end of the war-primarily at the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. After graduation from Francis Parker, with pending draft notices at the age of 17, Gorey enrolled for some art courses at the Art Institute of Chicago before entering the U.S. At graduation, Edward had the highest regional scores on college boards and received scholarships to Harvard and Yale and other academic institutions. He emerged from Francis Parker an exceptional student, active in school events, exhibits, school publications, and even getting drawings published in Chicago newspapers. A lovely two-page spread turns the opening to a long vertical to show the two men in the Mariposa Grove, relatively small even on horseback, surrounded by the hush and grandeur of the giant sequoias, while in another double-page scene, after a photo of the two at Glacier Point, Muir lies on his back at the edge of the canyon, demonstrating to an attentive Roosevelt how the glacier carved the deep valley below. Gerstein’s depiction of the exuberant president riding off with Muir is enchantingly comical and liberating. (You can't ever quite take the boy out of the man, and Rosenstock's use of her subjects’ childhood names evokes a sense of Neverland ebullience, even as the grownup men decided the fate of the wilderness.) The narrative is intimate and yet conveys the importance of the encounter both as a magnificent getaway for the lively president and a chance for the brilliant environmentalist to tell the trees’ side of the story. In a boyish three-day adventure, Teedie (Roosevelt) and Johnnie (Muir) dodge, if temporarily, the confines of more formal surroundings to experience firsthand the glories of the mountains and ancient forests. Theodore Roosevelt’s 1903 trip to the western parks included a backcountry camping trip-complete with snowstorm-with John Muir in the Yosemite Wilderness and informed the president’s subsequent advocacy for national parks and monuments. I always enjoy when there’s more to a character than I first expect, and both heroes offered that up. I liked Bill and Frankie quite a bit, especially as their characters developed and I learned their backstories. And then the real truths-and something definitely more intimate-emerge!ĭespite a promising set-up of an employee and boss unexpectedly spending time together when locked in a workplace storeroom, The Peppermint Schnapps Predicament didn’t quite work for me. My friend and I passed the time repeating Mel Brooks and Monty Python routines (think of the knight refusing passage who lost all of his limbs in the scene from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”), and we were roundly criticized by our ultra-serious American traveling companions. I remember participating in a human rights delegation to the West Bank in Palestine and standing for hours at one of the many arbitrary checkpoints (road closures) that make daily life for Palestinians so challenging.
